Acadia Workshop(s) 2025

In October 2025, I led two workshops back to back. The first one was for the North American Nature Photographer’s Association (NANPA)- my first time leading a group for them. This was a relatively short workshop- just 2-1/2 days, but we packed in the excursions, hitting sixteen different spots from Friday morning until Sunday morning. It was a great group and a pleasure to be with them. The photographers came from Colorado, Wisconsin, Texas and Maryland.

Then for my own Images of Acadia workshop, I had a smaller group than normal due to a couple health issues before the workshop started. But the smaller size only made it easier to get to know each other well and I think this might have been the ‘tightest’ group I’ve ever had. I had one returnee from the 2022 workshop, John from Toronto. The others were from Texas, Virginia and North Carolina. All together, we did twenty excursions over the 4-1/2 days we were together.

Each day we headed out between 5:30 and 6am to photograph the sunrise, whether that was on the coast or somewhere inland where we’d get some of that nice light. Then we’d stop somewhere else before heading back to the hotel or a local restaurant for a good breakfast. Later we’d hit a couple more spots before taking a lunch break and then finally head out again for another couple more locations including a sunset spot.

We had a good mix of weather during both workshops, from sunshine and blue skies to light rain and wind. As much as I enjoy a good blue sky day, it was great to have a variety of conditions to shoot in; I found some of my favorite pictures came during a spell of light rain, shooting raindrops at Duck Brook.

I took both groups to one of my favorite sunset locations, Bass Harbor Marsh, and both times we were fortunate to experience some stunning sunsets- beautiful pink and orange clouds and skies, which made the long drive over to the ‘quiet side’ of the island all worth it. But one thing made me laugh; every time I took a group to Otter Point, there would be a bride and groom either having some pictures taken or actually getting married as we were taking pictures. I think we saw four or five couples all together.

I had a Zoom call with the NANPA photographers a couple weeks after we returned and was really impressed with the quality of their images. Not that I was surprised; I could tell during our time together that they all really knew what they were doing. And the images I’ve seen from my second workshop have all been equally impressive. I’ll post some of them in a separate link once I get them.

The 2026 Images of Acadia workshop will likely take place October 13-18th, I’ll have details soon after I hear from then hotel and work out the schedule. If you’d like to be one of the first to know when registration opens up, email me to be put on the ‘VIP’ list.
